Group Name: Natures Sway Baby Hammocks
Description:

The natural way to welcome your newborn.

Natures Sway baby hammocks are a cocoon-like fabric bed attached to a safe and gently bouncing spring.

"These type of beds have been used for centuries in many traditional cultures so we believe our baby hammock is an excellent back to nature beginning for the babies of the 21st century. Your newborn may sleep night and day in the baby hammock and it is a lovely natural way to keep baby nearby. You can hang it in the living room for day sleeps and right next to the parents bed for night sleeps. Many parents report their babies sleep for longer in a hammock and will often self-settle due to the comfort and motion if they ever startle awake. A baby hammock is the ideal first bed for your baby because it mimics features of the "in utero" experience that your baby is already so familiar with."

The fabric gently molds around the baby keeping them in the middle of the hammock, face-up,  with plenty of fresh air due to the bellows action of the bouncing motion. Natures Sway baby hammocks give continuous comfort through the gentle motion created by either the caregiver or the baby's own movement.

Two Mums Say members, Hope and Gillymama, have been selected to trial Natures Sway Baby Hammocks. Watch this space for their reviews.

I LOVED my hammock, two children used ours, William just came out of his at 4.5 months old. No flat head and helped with his reflux!
Gillymama - 9:53 PM on Thu-18-Nov-2010 reply | message
Well - its been...well a month really since I last talked about our gorgeous hammock. William is growing so fast, he so almost at the end of the Hammock - Not quite sure how long we can keep him in there. I'll have to take some more photos to show you. also noticed that it hangs lower as he is a heavy wee dude - the spring at the top of the frame is fantastic... everything was so well planned and thought out for a growing baby.

Hope- The new combined mattress does sound interesting doesn't it!

Hi Suzy, I think you'll really enjoy using a Hammock for your new bubs. Congratulations, how exciting- I loved preparing for my 1st. Yes it does conjure up images of the Stork - cute!
I agree - Kidspot is so helpful and all the reviews over at MumsSay have helped me many times to make up my mind about toys etc. Feel free to ask any questions about the Natures Sway Hammock.
Suzy - 12:04 PM on Thu-14-Oct-2010 reply | message
Thanks so much for all the reviews. I am having a good look around for all the baby essentials as I'm having my first baby in January. I was not sure about using a hammock as I have only recently emigrated to NZ and back in the UK where I am originally from I don't think I ever saw a baby hammock, even my mum can't remember anyone ever having one. So this was all new and a little confusing to me. But I have to say when seeing the hammock I was instinctively drawn to it and now reading your reviews I really do think I will be getting one for the bump when he arrives. It kind of reminds me of the image of a Stork dropping off the baby's in Dumbo! (I have an 18 month old niece and that's her favourite film too cuddle up too so I before leaving the UK i saw it quite a few times with her).
Kidspot has been so helpful over these past few weeks, such a great resource! Thanks x

Natures Sway are developing a "all in one" matress and stiffener as we speak. This may even be available now, so definitely go to their website www.naturessway.co.nz and check it out under "accessories"-enjoy your hammock!
Hope - 4:52 PM on Wed-13-Oct-2010 reply | message
No problem Paula...yes I think the stiffener is a worthwhile addition to the package. Well done you for the great trademe score! We love trademe! Keeps the cost of parenthood down thats for sure! And thats another wonderful thing about this hammock is that you can keep it and use it for the next kid(s), and then store it away for the grandkids! Another thing is you could even keep it to store toys in later on, like a toy hammock!
Gillymama - 3:25 PM on Wed-13-Oct-2010 reply | message
Hi Paula,
I agree with Hope, bit of a personal preference. Newborns are so light that its fine to use without the stiffener, but I think as they get heavier then you kind of need it... just my opinion. :-)
PaulaF - 10:54 AM on Wed-13-Oct-2010 reply | message
LOL! Yeah. That was me asking the question but I forgot to sign in before asking!! Well I have just managed to get a nearly new one from trademe - the delux package with a jolly jumper too! So I think I'll take your advice and get a matress stiffener and use it if he needs it. I plan on giving him a brother or sister too so I'll keep it for them to use as well. Thanks for the advice Hope! :-)

and I forgot to mention... the best thing is that it is lovingly made in NEW ZEALAND!
Gillymama - 10:49 PM on Wed-29-Sep-2010 reply | message
Hope, I completely agree with all that you have said :-) I too was impressed when reading thru the Natures Sway website and also in the booklet that was supplied with the Hammock, about its history & origins and how successful it was in Switzerland. 10,000 Hammocks sold in the first 6 years of business is serious business! And now that I have one of these wonderful creations in my home I can see why. And also there are many copies on the market - no surprises there. But Natures Sway have really set themselves apart on this one and the bar is high! How many companies have been using 100% cotton for over 16 years (they started in 1993 when the owner made a Hammock for her daughter & she slept in it for 20months!) and now they have a lovely organic range ( that I am trialing) and lovely earthy natural colours as well. The organic range is 95 % UV resistant and has anti fungal properties - how good is that?? Perfect for outdoors, camping... can't wait for summer. I think Heirloom piece sums it up as well - it was a moment of excitement when I unpacked it from the lovely box and I hope to take great care of it and pass it on to my kids when they need it!

Comments from Hope: Happy Little Kiwi

Well after some decent time using the Natures Sway hammock system, I can honestly and with complete integrity; say that I am a convert.

During the course of doing this product review I've had the pleasure of trialing a truly, truly fabulous product. But thats not all.. No! ...So many other words to cover it! Try also: beautiful, luxurious, natural, soothing, cosy, practical...the list goes on!

It truly is lovely to look at, and when you first set eyes on it you can't help but want to touch it and use it. The hammock comes in beautiful natural colours, made using organic fibres and comprising of high quality extras and textures that are designed to be easy on the eye, It really is flawlessly designed, with attention to detail that is quite awesome.

I do feel I have to stress that it really is fantastic. Easy to use, easy to care for and keeps my baby snug and safe. Since sleeping in the Natures Sway Hammock, with the coco fibre mattress stiffener he sleeps and settles so well in it. I've found its portable, useable, and makes so much sense when you think about it.

Babies love to be cosy, warm, safe and swaddled, rocked and gently swayed, and the Natures Sway Hammock covers all of those needs. Perhaps best of all I have recently discovered that ITS the ORIGINAL KIWI MADE HAMMOCK!!!!!!!!!! Its been around for 6 years now, and is a labour of love to all involved in its design and production.

Others on the market may seem similar, but none rival the Natures Sway Hammock. I've looked in baby supply stores, and online researching other companies products, and still I prefer the Natures Sway one.

Competitors in NZ now produce a similar product, based on the Natures Sway original hammock but personally I think they lack the sense of quality which could lead one to becoming an "heirloom piece" that the Natures Sway Hammock does. Simply put, they are just not as "LUSCIOUS" as a Natures Sway hammock, they seem to lack the detail, the lovingly crafted sense of luxury, or are vastly more expensive to purchase than a Natures Sway, and well, I just didn't warm to them.

I also discovered something else in the course of this trial.

We all seem to assimilate the Swiss with being leaders and innovators in holistic approaches to well being and in its first year Natures Sway sold ten thousand units within Switzerland, making it the first commercially available Hammock in Switzerland and well, if the Swiss like it, it has to have some benefits doesn't it?

At the end of the day, what really matters, what ONLY matters, is that my baby; my very own special little Kiwi man, is happy using it. That it shows some benefits for him; that it does, and is what the company says it is and will do for him....and I have to say - it does! I was sceptical at first, but now I wish every parent could have the privilege of using one.

At the end of the day this is a product review from my own point of view.

I can't make you go out and buy one.

I can't demand, coerce or force you into it.

What I CAN do is highly HIGHLY recommend to anyone who has a baby on the way or a newborn already that they look into getting one of these hammocks. They are probably the BEST item of baby gear you could ever purchase.

Read our previous reviews on the hammock, do your own research, and make up your own mind. I'm sure you will agree with Gill and I that Natures Sway offers the best of everything in its baby hammock and range of accessories.
Hope - 3:07 PM on Fri-10-Sep-2010 reply | message
Yes congrats Paula - First time baby-ness is WONDERFUL!
As Gill said, you will love this item, and will not regret spending the money. For premmy babies, colicky or just insecure babies, this hammock rocks - literally and figuratively! ONce you see it and use it a few times, no one will convince you to part with it ever!
Gillymama - 10:59 PM on Wed-1-Sep-2010 reply | message
Congratulations Paula- not too long to wait! I think you'd love it for your baby.
PaulaF - 2:33 PM on Tue-31-Aug-2010 reply | message
I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first and am constantly researching baby products for our new arrival.
I have heard nothing but praise for this product and although Grandma and Grandpa are going to buy the cot for their first Grandchild I am seriously considering purchasing one of these popular and versatile hammocks for our new arrival. The best deal I've found so far is $275 for the hammock and stand at babystuff.co.nz (free shipping.) Still have a few months to convince the hubby it's a sterling choice!! Wish me luck!

Hope - 2:26 PM on Mon-30-Aug-2010 reply | message
Can't agree more with your comment below Gilly. The gentle curve of the hammock seems more natural and comforting to our baby boy than lying flat. When we tried to put him in his bassinette after using the hammock he played up something chronic. I also love the fabric and the materials used in this item. So soft, and natural. No bleach or toxins used to produce it or synthetic fibre to trap moisture against the babies body.
Gillymama - 2:19 PM on Mon-30-Aug-2010 reply | message
Hi 'Anonymous'
Great question! [Quote] "Do people use these hammocks instead of a bassinet/moses basket, or as an extra? Are they ok for night time sleeps?"

Yes they do - I think part of this review is to inform that they are great for night time sleeps. The environment that a Hammock provides is a natural soft curve. The Baby is gently supported, like if they were in your arms. There is a standard mattress and a coco fibre stiffener to give a bit more support if you wish. Also in my personal opinion, I like that the hammock supports the natural curve of a babies spine. I dont think they are meant to lay Flat on their backs from newborn. Just look at how they draw their legs up into the froggy pose... their lower spine is curved naturally and only starts to straighten when the start to stand upright and walk. So I think in the early months a Hammock would provide a great night time sleep environment. I would love to discuss the safety concerns of this further in the Discussion Board (above)

Hi, I'm not sure what the "recommendation" is, but everything I purchased second hand I always got a new mattress to go with it. I think it's safer that way as you can't be sure how the mattress was looked after and also what environment it has been in ie: smoking, damp, unwashed etc. Hope that helps. If you call Natures Sway directly they would be able to advise you though.

QUOTE: Like the old cradles which rocked baby gently to sleep (the modern car can often do the same but is rather a pain to put the baby into and take him/her out again with out waking them) this hammock will act in the same way. Gently stimulating the baby's vestibular system, which is foundational to regulating sensory input to the developing central nervous system, this is an excellent way to calm the baby with rhythmic movement as well as carry on the gentle stimulation of the vestibular system which is foundational to gravity, balance and proprioception. Excellent all round. Would love to see one in action. Must go round to a friend's who has had her recent arrival! :) UNQUOTE:

Wow, now thats getting technical, but thanks for the explaination of the reasons this hammock is such a successful thing when it comes to settling down little ones. Lochie had to spend the night in his bassinette last night (hammock was decorated with "baby output" after a particularly large feed and needed soaking and washing) and it was so much harder to get him to settle in the bassinette than the hammock. IN the end we took him out of the bassinette and put him in our bed with his little mattress thing that stops us rolling on him and him from rolling over onto his face, and slept with him there, which was the only way we could get him to stop grizzling and go to sleep. Poor little mite.
Thankfully his hammock is nice and dry and clean again after a good wash, so once again he's tucked up and snoozing peacefully and I am able to have some time to myself. PHEW!

From Gillymama: Our baby hammock arrived by courier this morning. Thank you SOOO much - it is fabulous.

I had to wait all day to unpack it, and within minutes it was up hanging in the lounge/kitchen door frame. Baby William happily lay in it then fell asleep and sucked his thumb for the first time - must have been super comfy!! The swinging/bouncing action was so nice.

We are going away tomorrow to stay in a friends house and we are taking the hammock with us. It was amazing that it all packed away in that little bag, it's smaller than my nappy bag.

You are so generous to supply the Deluxe pack & the new cocofibre mattress - it all looks so fantastic, and we can't wait to set it up at home when we get back and start blogging about it. I have so many great things to say about it & already taken lots of photos.

Once again, thank you so much. All your products look wonderful and the quality is superb.
