Dry July
Posted 9:06 AM on Wed-27-Jun-2012
Last night, phones around the country went red hot with texts and calls confirming the worst news. A wonderful friend of ours has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It's only grade one, but it's still the big C just the same. And what makes it worse, is that around five years ago, she was diagnosed with leukemia which she so bravely fought and won.

I never know what to say in these situations. It sux. No four letter word can describe how unfair it is. Why? Would be the biggest question. Isn't once more than enough for a thirty something woman to take.

So I got to thinking, what can I do to help? It's not like I can take her medication or treatments for her, but having seen an article about Dry July on the tv a few nights back, ironically, just yesterday I had looked at the website to see what it was all about. That's all I did. I looked. That was until this morning. I have bitten the bullet and decided I'll sign up in hope of even raising a few hundred dollars to be donated to Auckland Hospital for the home comforts of adults living with cancer.

The Bloke thinks there'll be days where I go out of my mind - thanks for the vote of confidence dear! It's not like I drink every day, but it is a habit on a Saturday say, to have a wine and a few snacks late in the afternoon, and occasionally on say a Thursday or Friday, a friend and I will have a glass later in the day while our kids hang out.

I hope that some of my lovely Kidspot friends will step up and help me by donating to this worthy cause, a cause which has touched almost everyone in some way at some point in their lives.

Thanks everyone! It is such a worthwhile cause - and hey, what's 31 days without a wine - that's nothing compared to what I know my friend is going to have to go through in the upcoming months.

Thanks to those of you who have donated already - you are awesome!

I also have a friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer in her spine, she had breast cancer 8 years ago so it's really awful! Both of my grandma's had breast cancer so I'm always supportive of any fundraising for the cause - good on you!

They both fought it and lived, infact one of them is turning 87 in two days time!

Good Luck Jo, I'm going to donate too as my good friend is doing dry July to raise money in support of her friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer too.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It seems some people win a battle only to be faced with another. I will be donating to DryJuly but won't be doing in myself as I have not had more than a couple of drinks in over 6 years.

Good on you Jo!! Sorry to hear about your friend. Just last week I found out a lovely mum, who's daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the same time my son was diagnosed with hodgkins disease (almost 2 yrs ago) has gone on to develop Leukemia. She has 6 children and I am hoping for a miracle for her too.
I have heard about this wonderfull cause too, good luck!!!
