Cutting the apron strings
Posted 1:54 PM on Wed-15-Feb-2012
And so it has begun. Over the last couple of weeks I have started to untie those apron strings and allow Mister 9 (and subsequently Mister 7) more independence. In a way, he's not really requested it before, but now it seems to be snowballing and I'm not that sure how I feel about it.  It started off with playing outside on his bike - no biggie but as the kids have made friends with a family two doors round it means riding on the road too. Luckily we live at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac so I'm OK with them doing that as I know they'll keep an eye out for cars. Plus they get constant reminders from moi! Then it was going down to the creek that runs along the back of our property. Last week he wanted to go to the library and I surprised myself by telling him he could scooter down there on his own. We are very lucky that we have such great facilities within about a two minute walk. But as he was worried about someone nicking his scooter we all went. Then last night he had Cubs and I told him that he could walk there and back (it's even closer than the library!).

I'm all for giving him his independence but I still worry and wonder what happened to my little baby boy!

How hard did you find it to cut the apron strings? What did you start off with to give them some independence?

Started this year. Our son started Year 7 this school year and goes to St. Peter's, so he rides the train home (albeit with a cousin and some friends) and walks home, too. He doesn't walk home alone, though, since one of his former classmates from primary school lives on the same street as we do and lives further down the street. As for going to the park, my husband (and I at times) still accompanies both our kids since they always want to go together. When they want to bike, we him go with a cousin (same age) on their own to a big parking area located on the same side of our street. That's as far as we can cut those strings for now. Both my husband and I are a bit protective of our 11 1/2-year-old, because he does tend to be careless and adventurous. Our 8-year-old daughter is still too young, anyway.

We started with walking to school, I now allowe Mr10 to walk to the shop. It's across a busy rd so was a biggy. He also scooters to his friends who lives a couple of streets down (not very busy streets) and he also scooters up to the school (a 2 minute scooter) to practice cricket or rugby with a friend. Miss8 and her friend have just started to go up to the school with them. The younger ones have had lots of practice, by going to the shop etc. with their big brothers.
