Survey: joys of motherhood

Motherhood is many things to many different people, yet most mums would agree there are super cool things about being a parent, including:

1. Uttering phrases like “When I was your age…” with complete disregard to how annoying you are.
“When I was your age” is interchangeable with “Don’t talk back”, “Do as your told”, “If you don’t like it, get out and walk” .

2. It’s more fun to name a human being than, say, a fluffy kitten.

I was a little disappointed when the father of my children banned me from using the name “Rory”. “That’s a name for a lion,” was his response. And he was sticking to it.

3. Three words to ensure the blood keeps pumping through your heart with excitement: driving with kids
Driving with children in the car was clearly the reason someone invented anti-anxiety medication. Oh, and those bad Baby On Board signs.

4. You get to discover that no matter how much you THOUGHT you’d be different to your own parents, you are actually a carbon copy.

Minus the beard, beer gut and bad 1980s clothing.

5. Motherhood increases your appreciation of a good night’s sleep.

And also makes you realise why hangovers are no longer worth having.

6. You can fantasise that your child will become fabulously wealthy and buy you a new home.
In this day of unattainably high house prices, mothers no longer need to waste our fantasies on ourselves – we can put that pressure on our kids instead!

7. Even Katie Holmes who has wealth, career opportunities, a famous husband and her own good looks ended up getting Mum Bum after she had Suri.

Mothers have more in common with other celebrities than the average 22-year-old who still thinks they will grow up to be Lady Gaga. NB: Mum Bum is a special phenomenon known only to those who have given birth and discovered the architecture that once held up bits of the body is no longer structurally sound.

8. You’re kids are funnier than any professional comedy act.
Only mothers know how genuinely hilarious kids can be. Even newborn babies can rouse a belly laugh (especially when they empty their belly)
.

9. Everyone has to play by Mummy’s rules (no matter how random they seem)

And, the Top 10 best thing about parenthood is…
Watching your kids sleep in their own beds. Nothing makes your heart so big with love or your brain so flooded with dopamine than adoring your kids while they can’t talk back.

The most beautiful thing about being a mother is the shorthand we suddenly have with other mothers. There’s an understanding, a mutual experience and a passionate love that can transcend all those horror stories mothers like to share.

We want the rest of the world to understand why we take such pleasure in our roles (even if we do work for 18 hours straight and remain on call for 6 hours a night). So share your great joys of motherhood in the comments below.

If Mummy ain’t happy, ain’t noooooo-one gonna be happy. Ain’t nothing more fun than getting to be the boss.

Fantastic Lexy - love it. Number 10 is soooooo true. I have had my two home in the last 10 days sick (argh!) and it would be fair to say they have talked my ears off and I am feeling a little done - so I have appreciated tucking them in late at night when they are soundly snoring (colds!) and thinking aren't they just such a pleasure.

And how before you were a mum, listening to Mums talk about their baby's new tooth, sleeping patterns or how brilliant their baby is because it can roll over, clap hands, wave etc was more boring than watching grass grow... but once you become a Mum you find yourself "marvelling" in those same "boring" baby-isms about your own baby!lol

I wish this was like Facebook and I could *LIKE LIKE LIKE* this blog - so funny and you've nailed it dead on! One of the biggest changes we noticed was our cat (who used to be 'our baby') has become just a cat ;)
