Ear Piercing. At what age is best?

I understand that this can be a 'hot' topic. I myself had my ears pierced at 6-years old and they quickly got infected (with my busy-bodying) which resulted in my mother not re-piercing them until I was 12 and I looked after them myself. It resulted in me growing up around extended family I was always an outcast because all the girls were pierced. My sister had hers done at 3months, and now at 18 has never looked back.
I was thinking of getting my daughters at 3months also, before she starts teething and pulling, or shall I wait until she's 4 or 5 and understands completely what's going on?

I personally can't stand babies with earings. But this is my personal opinion. babies are beautiful without them.
I made my girls wait until they were eight. I wanted them to be of an age to understand what they were doing and were old enough to care for them themselves. Eight worked well. no infections etc so far.
My youngest has just turned five and hasn't even asked about getting hers done yet. though im sure she will at some point. Im not gona raise the suggestion though. I think its one they need to make on their own.

I only have boys and am sooooooooo against males with their ears pierced! But I was 12 when I had mine done and the deal was that I had to look after them because if they closed up or got infected I wouldn't be allowed them again until I was old enough to pay for them myself...personally, I think there are enough things to clean, sanitize and wipe on a baby without adding pierced ears to the mix. . .but I'm lazy like that, don't believe in making more work for myself!lol

I was 12 too. My mother was adamant I wait until 13 but one day I was out with my aunty and ...
I don't like seeing small babies with ears pierced either, it seems unnecessary to put them through that pain for no good reason. Actually it always strikes me as odd that so many women who cringe at the idea of getting their babies vaccinated will still happily shove a piece of metal through their earlobes to make them 'look cute'.
Personally I'd wait until you think she is old enough and responsible enough to look after them properly herself. I certainly wouldn't get it done for a preschooler or early school age child as there are so many ways they can be damaged or even torn.

Hi rmns, I waited till my daughter was 5 to get hers done, she went through all the rigmarole of picking them, getting marker dots, sitting in the chair and then when they were about to gun it she chickened out,not once but three times! She really wanted them but was too scared of the pain. If i had another girl (which i'm not) lol i would definitely go when she was younger. I personally think it's better to wait until they want earrings themselves and then get it done (maybe 3 or 4) , but don't see anything wrong with mum's who get them done as babies.Good luck and remember only you know whats best for you and your family

My daughter got her ears pierced at 5yrs. She had been wanting to get them done for a while as her friends had theirs done at 3 or 4yrs. Where I live most places won't pierce until 5yr

My mum had my ears pierced when I was a baby, so I have no recollection of it all. I do however, like the way they were pierced that they're exactly in the middle of each lobe. With my daughter, she decided she wanted her ears pierced when she was 3 years old, which we had done by her pediatrician.

I've too noticed that this is always a "hot topic" lol! Where I come from babies ears are pierced at around 3 months without any problems and it's no big deal. It's not thought of as a fashion statement (for me it's not religious reasons either!) - it's just something that gets done! Every female relative of mine and all my overseas female friends had their ears pierced as babies and none of them had any issues/ complications ever. It has been done for generations and continues to this day. My daughter was born here, but I got hers done at 10 months when we went overseas and she's never had a problem with them. It was done by a pediatrician at her clinic, took less than a minute and was over before my daughter realised what was going on. Personally I think around the 3 month mark is the best, as they are less likely to tug at their ears or have other toddlers tug/ poke at their ears out of interest!

When Pocket asks to have hers done, then I'll think about getting them done. I was 6 I think when I had mine done. Old enough to ask for it to be done. I don't like to make things in to a big issue - I know it's personal choice, but I can't really see the point in people who make their child wait until they're 12 for example because they had theirs done at 12.

My concern about a little baby having them done would be them touching their ear and getting the cleaning solution in their mouths, or pulling at the ear ring and eating or putting it up their nose.
