Hi we have just found out we are moving to Wellington in 2 months time and so I have to find us a house to rent but I don't know the area at all as we only emigrated to NZ 8 months ago. Can anyone help me by letting me know what areas are good and what areas are bad? we need to be in commutable distance to petone (no more than 30mins away) for my husbands work and in a fairly flat area for the little ones. Thankyou in advance for any help you can offer I will be extremely grateful.

Hi!

We emigrated from the UK about 7 years ago and my husband's job was in Petone. I had lived up north until I was 19 so was unfamiliar with this area too. Now this is only my personal opinion ... we didn't want to buy in Wellington because it was too expensive and the roads are a nightmare (so many hills and narrow streets!). So we looked all around the Hutt Valley. We also wanted a flat section for my little boys and that was difficult to find in our price range. After seeing 80+ houses (I kid you not), we found the perfect one in Stokes Valley. Since moving here we have NEVER regretted it. It is such a fantastic community of friendly, helpful people. Yes, we have our problems, as any area does I believe, but the people are proud to live here and we have met so many who have lived here their entire lives or who have gone overseas in their 20s but returned to settle down here.

There are other fantastic communities in the Hutt too. And of course, they are all within easy commute to Petone, plus Wellington is at most a half hour drive away for events and attractions. If you want to message me I can give you some pointers? Just hover over the Home button at the top of the page and click on Messages

Good luck with your move!

Hi Julie
Thankyou so much for the reply and I will look on the map at stokes valley, I am so worried about choosing a house in the wrong area and that is why we are sticking to renting for a while until we are confident that we know what we are getting into. Thinking about it a better question may be - are there any areas I really shouldn't look at? it all seems so alien when you just have a trade me ad with an address and area that means nothing to you. We went through the same thing when we moved here to Nelson 6 months ago but we knew one person here to give me advice and pointers and that really helped so I do appreciate your opinion. I believe that mums know what is important to other mums when looking for a home for your family :)
