The loss of a pet .. how do you handle it ?
Posted 8:42 AM on Sun-22-May-2011

Aside from the kids finding out and getting upset .. im wondering how You ladies handle it ... can u do the burials yaself ? or get others to do it .....

I woke up this morning and One of my beloved Rabbits had died in the night :( .. she was older but it doesnt make it any easier .. even have to get mum to come and bury her as i cant handle that :(      ... im lucky i dont have kids here but its still hard and esp when ive had them many years (this one i adopted her and her mate at 18 months and had them nearly 5 yrs)  .. i have a few others but it still hurts

I kinda expected something like this as she wasngt lookin well yesterday ... but thought it was winter sniffles

It never gets any easier. My last cat was ill and disappeared when I was about 38 weeks pregnant and I was a mess with the preggy hormones as well. The only time I saw my dad cry was when he was burying our dog. Mum said the only other time she had seen Dad cry was when his Mum died (before I was born).

Both our cats are middle aged (10 and 12 years old) so I know that I will have to face it with my kids one day. It is important to be honest with the kids and allow them to grieve. It will help them to cope when a person close to them dies.

Aw, so sorry to hear that Rachael - it must be really hard to lose one. I have only ever had one pet. I have asthma and as a child wasn't allowed a pet but I adore animals. My first and only pet is a cat who we have now had for 17 years. We brought her with us when we emigrated from the UK. She has an amazing personality - there are so many stories to tell! I don't even want to contemplate the day when she passes - we always joke that she will live forever :)
