Being self-employed isn't all roses
Posted 8:24 PM on Fri-5-Oct-2012
Hubby is self-employed, has been for 15 years or so, and his work is seasonal - busy in summer, quiet in autumn/winter.  One of the things that bugs us immensely is the comments we get from family members who think that the money tree is constantly in full bloom at our place.  Even when we tell them it's not like that they don't really beleive us ........ most probably because 10 years ago it was 'boom' time for hubby's work which lasted for a short while.  Why do people think just because you say you're "self-employed" you've got disposable income??  So frustrating.  Not sure why I'm blogging about this today but it's just been a frustrating week I think!

I hear you! We're self employed and yes, we do have nice things but we've worked damned hard to get those nice things. There have been times where The Bloke hasn't had a day off for weeks on end, and works from 8am til 10pm.

I think the ones who think it's a cushy road to take don't realise, that it's the business owners who are the ones that miss out on being paid when times are tough. And don't get me started on staff with sticky fingers who think it's their god given right to help themselves.

Ah yes, self-employed is the bomb ... not! Hubby and I are both self-employed which means as we have finally taken a week off we will be down 25% on next month's income.

Im self employed too, though im thankful i havn't encountered too many comments about being rolling in money.
Being self employed, although rewarding in someways, is rather stressful in others. For me, just when i start to relax and think that finally i can start saving some money, something changes and im back to counting pennies.

My dad is self employed and I have seen him lose out on money due to dishonest customers, he raised us as mum wasnt cut out to be a mum, it has taken him years and years and years but is finally mortgage free and his income certainly wasnt what I would call high or even middle of the road so I know that just because you are self employed it doesnt mean you are doing well. Sorry to hear that family members think they have the right to comment on your money situation when they dont know the story, sometimes people need to keep to their own business
